2013 HIGHLIGHTS – Screenings / FASHION / Open Studios Weekend

Spanish design has a distinctive flair that is often difficult to define: is it the use of colour? The choice of shapes? The taste for prints? Sometimes words are not enough to encapsulate the fresh approach to the fashion of young Spanish designers.

So we’ll let the images speak for themselves. For the third year in a row we invite some of the freshest and most original young Spanish designers to show us their very own universe in a selection of videos curated by Noelia Terrón-Laya.

Gala Knörr / Open Studios Weekend

GALA KNÖRR was born and raised in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, Spain. She graduated from Parsons School of Design, Paris, with a BFA in Fine Arts. Throughout her almost five years in that city, Knörr was influenced by its bohemian strata and subcultural inter-relations. Now based in London, she has recently obtained her MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.

In Javier Montes’ The Hotel Life, a hotel critic happens upon some strange goings-on in the next room: a couple are acting out some kind of sex ritual, where a woman gives a series of commands, but few answers. Intrigued, the critic decides to track down this enigmatic woman, and embarks on a journey with unimaginable consequences. From city to city, hotel to hotel, room to room, he begins to discover that pursuit is in itself a form of escape …

2013 HIGHLIGHTS – José Ovejero / Nothing ever happens / Book launch

This event showcases two recent translations by Hispabooks of two works of fiction by two highly influential new talents in the Spanish literary world: José Ovejero and Javier Montes.

José Ovejero has published novels, collections of short stories, travel books, poetry and drama. He has been awarded a number of prizes. His books have been translated into several languages.

2013 HIGHLIGHTS – In Development / Back to Basque by Tracey Moberly

Presentation of the multi-platform art project initiated by Spain NOW!, visual artist Tracey Moberly and Dr. Dacia Viejo-Rose, University of Cambridge. This project will look at the formation of identity, memory and displacement and will commence in autumn 2013. It is expected that the first results of the three-year-long project will be showcased at Spain NOW! 2014.
