2013 HIGHLIGHTS – Francisco Ortega / Open Studios Weekend

The OPEN STUDIOS WEEKEND is a chance to see dynamic  Spanish artists based in London.  Since its origins in 2009, Spain NOW!’s mission has been to promote contemporary Spanish art in London:  this new initiative is one further step to highlighting important emerging artists, and to making their presence known both at national and international levels.

The driving force behind my work is a desire to explore the unique expressive properties of paint.  My paintings are made of fragmented and partially distorted compositions, abstract and layered elements that generate a dialogue between improvisation and the meditated construction of an image.  My work is as much about the process as it is about the finished product.

I live in a borough with one of the most diverse populations in the world: Hackney. This diversity is reflected in many ways, from gastronomy to music or art and cultural festivals. All of this creates a perfect environment for an artist to feel inspired and be creative. My paintings are made of fragmented and partially distorted compositions, abstract and layered elements that generate a dialogue between improvisation and the meditated construction of an image.  My work is as much about the process as it is about the finished product.”
