Presented by Giles Tremlett, The Guardian correspondent in Madrid.

This event showcases two recent translations by Hispabooks of two works of fiction by two highly influential new talents in the Spanish literary world:  Javier Montes and José Ovejero.

In Javier Montes’  The Hotel Life, a hotel critic happens upon some strange goings-on in the next room: a couple are acting out some kind of sex ritual, where a woman gives a series of commands, but few answers. Intrigued, the critic decides to track down this enigmatic woman, and embarks on a journey with unimaginable consequences. From city to city, hotel to hotel, room to room, he begins to discover that pursuit is in itself a form of escape …

This novel confirms Javier Montes as one of the most individual voices of his generation, characterised by a wry sense of humour, a talent for ambiguity, a love of fables and masks, and a firm grip on a chaotic story.  The Hotel Life twists like a classic thriller and turns into a dark parable, open to any number of interpretations.
