Antonio Luque (sr. Chinarro)

SrChinarroSr. Chinarro is a musical group founded in Sevilla, Spain, around 1990. Its style, which started as a high-quality imitation of British groups such as The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen or New Order, and American such as as Galaxie 500 or Slint, has mutated over time to become something perfectly recognizable and irreplaceable.
Despite the fact that it considers itself a group, the weight of Sr. Chinarro’s falls solely upon Antonio Luque. The multiple reincarnations of this project, which could very well be considered as personal, have gravitated around him. He is, in fact, the only original member of the group to have remained in it throughout its more than 15-year history.

Sr. Chinarro’s greatest attraction is, without a doubt, the lyrics of its songs, composed almost in their entirety by Antonio Luque and, with the exception of the first recordings, entirely in Spanish.

In these songs, Luque combines Surrealism and Costumbrism. absurd metaphors, double entendres, word-play and costumbrist images are everywhere to be found in the lyrical production of Antonio Luque. His poetical quality has reached its highest and best level in his latest productions. He is even preparing his first foray into publishing.

From his first work, recorded in the USA and produced by Kramer, until his last, Ronroneando (Purring), the project has gone from strength to strength in terms of quality and publication values: many records, many EPs (already de-catalogued), a present high that surpasses any past lows – and with a stable band. The life-changing, 2005 recording El Fuego Amigo (Friendly Fire), regarded by various publications as the best record of the year was immediately followed by El Mundo Según (The World According to…), and produced by his current label, Mushroom Pillow.

In 2008, having recently published Ronroneando (Purring) and after two years of non-stop touring, the group crosses the pond to perform in Mexico and Brazil. During this time, and encouraged by various editors, Antonio Luque published his first book Socorrismo (Lifesaving) and is currently preparing his second.

In April 2011, a new and long-awaited musical work, recorded with his usual team of collaborators, sees the light of day and entails Luque’s definitive maturity.
