Gala Knörr / Open Studios Weekend

The OPEN STUDIO WEEKEND is a chance to see dynamic Spanish artists based in London. Since its origins in 2009, Spain NOW!’s mission has been to promote contemporary Spanish art in London: this new initiative is one further step to highlighting important emerging artists, and to making their presence known both at national and international levels.

‘MEET & GREET’ Special event from 3.00 to 4.00 pm

GALA KNÖRR was born and raised in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, Spain. She graduated from Parsons School of Design, Paris, with a BFA in Fine Arts. Throughout her almost five years in that city, Knörr was influenced by its bohemian strata and subcultural inter-relations. Now based in London, she has recently obtained her MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. Her work has been exhibited predominantly in Europe and the USA, where she also works as an independent curator.

“I am curious about the concept of interconnectivity and desire. I like to study the past and history to comprehend the present I live in, what led me here to a globalised society. I take real life icons inspired by the subcultures of the 20th century, I transform them into portraits of contemporary youth culture, creating a non-linear narrative of happenings and stories. I investigate the depths of contemporary subculture. I am interested in the way relationships are built within the niche of the underground, how they are affected by a desensitized public that lives in a highly globalized popular culture consuming society, and the use of the rough and the destructive for a sociological rebirth.”
